I feel like it would stay in the original Subnautica world and just elaborate on what happens even further. Maybe instead of having a lot of water, it would be a place where water is a bit harder to find, and ground vehicles are more useful. But I personally feel like they should expand on the deep parts of the ocean, make more to it other than a bunch of empty space than some underwater lava caverns. Maybe allow the character(maybe Riley came back for another expedition?) to figure out more of what happened to the precursors and maybe have some traveling back in time scene to show exactly what happened to them.

Idk bout what I wrote. But 2 things I know, 1.) I wrote a theory(I guess kinda), and 2.) Subnautica 3 is technically confirmed cuz Unknown worlds is getting a story writer to help for another subnautica game.(They said on twitter). And here is a picture of their updated jobs page:
